The Philosophy Writing Center is located in Condon 529. It is sponsored by the Department of Philosophy with funding from the Office of Undergraduate Education. It is a free service to all undergraduates writing papers for philosophy courses. It is staffed by undergraduates who have received training from the Center for Instructional Development and from the Philosophy Department.
Many students do not realize that the requirements for a philosophy paper can be very different from the requirements for papers in other departments. In a philosophy paper, you will be expected to explicate and to critically evaluate arguments in your readings, to carefully formulate and argue for your own philosophical views, and to defend your views against relevant objections. The undergraduate tutors at the Philosophy Writing Center can help you to improve the quality of your philosophical writing by helping you to develop these skills.
A sign-up sheet for Writing Center appointments is posted on the bulletin board outside the door of the Writing Center. The Writing Center hours are listed to the right. If you are not able to meet at any of the times listed below, or if you find that there are no openings on the sign-up sheet that fit your schedule, you can email them at philwrit@u.washington.edu to arrange a special appointment. For written messages, there is also a Writing Center mailbox in the Philosophy Department Office (Condon 511). If possible, include in your message an email address or phone number where you can be reached, and the best times to call.
For the best possible service, drop off a copy of your paper or assignment in Condon 511 a day or two prior to your appointment so the tutor can review it.
